The Best Source of Calcium for Dogs

The Best Source of Calcium for Dogs

Just like us humans, getting all the necessary calcium in their diets is essential for your fur baby's healthy development of bones. They need calcium to develop and maintain strong bones, teeth, a healthy coat, and a properly functioning nervous system.

A shortage of calcium in their body will make your doggo defenseless against bone diseases, heart issues, and many more. So keep scrolling to which foods are the best source of calcium for your doggo to keep them happy, healthy and strong.

1. Yogurt

One of the best forms of calcium lies in yoghurt. You can easily add yoghurt to your canine's food, and they will surely love it! In addition, since yoghurt contains healthy fats, it is safe to be included in their diet. You can even pick low-fat yoghurt if your pooch is a little overweight

2. Cheese

The good news is that most dogs prefer the taste of cottage cheese and will find it that much easier to digest.

3. Chicken and Fish

Chicken, and fish like sardines, trout or salmon, are good sources of calcium and protein. Dogs enjoy them; however, ensure that you cook their fish well before giving it to your dog.

4. Vegetables

Calcium can be acquired from vegetables like broccoli, spinach, sweet potato, beans, etc. While some dogs love them raw, you can still be creative and prepare them as your dog enjoys them.

5. Bones for dogs

Bones are a good source of calcium - yes, but they might still hurt your fur baby's mouth and might damage their internal organs. IF you want to serve them bones, grind the bones into powder and mix them with other food or meal.

What are the symptoms you should look for to know if your dog has calcium deficiency:

  • Muscle tremors and twitching
  • Intermittent muscle spasms
  • Changes in their behaviour
  • Loss of appetite
  • Loss of control over their bodily movements
  • Listlessness
  • Weakness

How Much Calcium Do Dogs Need?

Like everything else, too much calcium is not good since not every dog is the same in its nutritional needs. Calculating their nutrient needs according to their weight is typically the most accurate way. Adult dogs will need about 120 milligrams of calcium per kilogram of weight. However, we recommend that you consult your veterinarian before adjusting your doggo's diet or adding calcium supplements to your dog's diet.

Disclaimer: Like us humans, no dogs are exactly the same. We highly recommend that you ask your veterinarian all of the important questions regarding your dog's calcium needs to ensure that your dog is healthy inside and outside.

On a tiring day jam-packed with playful activities, strong bones are what carry our dogs and keep them going. Add some calcium-rich foods in their diet or add veterinary recommended calcium supplements for dogs to get the proper nutritional support.
